Investing from South Africa: the five steps

  1. Get your documents ready. Passport, proof of address and the rest.
  2. Choose your exchange. ZiG on the ZSE or US dollars on the VFEX. Compare them.
  3. Open an account with a platform or broker that accepts clients living abroad.
  4. Send ZAR home to fund it. Options from South Africa: Mukuru.
  5. Buy, then track your dividends from your phone.

Exchange-control rules (SARB) may limit how much you can send. Check with your bank.

Tax on foreign dividends: see SARS.
